Paula Zahn, of CNN lore and employment, recently investigatived the proliferation of hip-hop and its impact on american society.Wait! What’s this? Children are listening to ‘hip-hop’? wow…. Damn Ms. Zahn. You’re ALL over this one. Thanks for the alarmist talk about hip hop (and the rivetting coverage of the dead playboy bunny). Thanks for being 20 years late. Thanks for being all freaked out about rap and mildly concerned about the meatgrinders that Iraq and Aghanistan have become at America’s hands. Hm. What is this like, four or five straight wars we’ve instigated? If you start at Vietnam (Gulf of Tonkin = WMDs with bellbottoms) and count the minor “squabbles” (you know, the ones that the press was banned from covering in South America?) you get pretty close to a 10-war streak. Ho hum, at least the terrorists have given america a nice puritanical freakshow to participate in.
Genereration i2k had never had a chance to really appreciate the witch-hunt tradition in full-face and sideshow garb. Communist-freak outs and bomb shelter picnics are a vague if existent memory, we’ve never gotten to bite full-fanged into the Dionysian Puritanism of full-fledged mole-whacking. It goes deep into America’s roots, from Updike’s (or is it Joyce’s) “The Lottery” to barrel-chested, meat-munching traditions like snake-stombing festivals and gopher-clubbing bacchanallias.

What does this have to do with Paula Zahn? The media with the greatest consumer volume, (a number of cable and broadcast channels) produce the LOUDEST and thus most audible part of the conversation. While she’s off trying to figure out ways to conjure up the devil by playing “This is why I’m hot, This is why I’m hot…” backwards on her Windows Media Player, little attention gets paid to much more critical news material. The rapid industrialization of the rest of the world will permanently change the environment. There’s about a dozen nations that have good reason and motivation to wanna fuck us up. Our federal law is changing to centralize power. Across the entire reach of the globe despotism and disease is on the rise. A huge part of the American economy now rests on faulty and risky investments. American purchasing power has dropped by 12% in comparrison to its main competitors over the last ten years. This one time window we are afforded to drastically better the existence of all men, where we could help the world feed and educate itself twice over, will flitter in and out of our hands and it is not likely to return….
so with that mind, can we please settle the scott storch and timbaland feud…..
cuz really… nobody wants to see shit like this happen….

My opinion: Frankly, the death penalty scares the shit out of me. Not b.c I intend to go out in the street wielding a portable John Deere chainsaw, on some sort of meth crash, howling insane, slashing and hacking like some sort of berzerk bay ridge kahn(which i don’t), but because it just feels like we’re treating human lives like Spam. And I’d like to think of humans as better than Spam.
(also, i’m not really sure who’s benefiting from the execution…. i mean killing… “killing”…. just look at that shit…. it’s a mean, savage word on the screen, no? it’s a brutal act. idk, it just makes no sense, like a preacher-man accusin me of being a drug user)

If you really think we’re in Iraq to promote democracy, you’re about 6 years, 400thousand casualties and one fat Enron too late. We’re there to secure our most valuable commodity. We’re there to strengthen our foothold in a region that has the most of this valuable commodity. We’re there to strengthen our support/allies as a number of Eurasian, and East Asian competitors arise. Oh, they may have SOME form of democracy now, but don’t let the shit we feed to New York Post readers fool ya… They don’t give out the truth to mouth-breathers…
Cuz if we really were that focused on democracy, free speech, the free press and human rights, we’d be “Liberating” Russia and China RIGHT NOW!!

Vladimir Putin, the “president” of Russia, is the former head of the KGB. For those of you born on THIS side of the Berlin Wall, they were the brutal Soviet counterpart to the CIA. Imagine the CIA with universal phone taps, four hundred times the number of secret prisons and one slack-jawed mass-murderer at the head. The last mass-murderer at the helm was Vladimir Putin.
Democracy was an accident practiced for, at most, 4 or 5 years in Russia. As they liberalized their economy, inflation shot up and the economy crumbled. Iron fisters tried a coup d’etat and the ppl literally came out and blocked the tanks from running through the capital. A proud moment for the human in all of us! But questions, fears, doubts remained.
Had democracy collapsed the Russian economy? Uh, no. The war in Afghanistan (remember, the Russians did this stupid shit first) actually killed the USSR. The ridiculous military spending in the face of starving millions, killed the USSR. Midnite massacres, paranoia, hatred, the debasement of all things human by the state, killed the USSR.
But Iron Fisters, like Vladimir Putin have made a big fat glossy return (I mean, you know you’re in the Big Boy Club when Dubya “looks into your soul” and sees a good man). What was a Communist, Proto-Fascist Kleptocracy (where the richest 0.1% mangle the laws of state for their own piles of profits) is now a Post-Democratic Proto-Fascist Kleptocracy.
And what is most shameful, as a Hyphen American, is that we won’t even call them on their bullshit. The russian people will be beaten, shot, stabbed, threatened, pepper sprayed, gassed and otherwise tortured to put down all democratic leanings. This is, and has been the case since the days of Ivan the Terrible. Check out their recent protest against power-freak Putin. You better believe every one of those ppl arested are going into the database, and most of them will be headed for “a meeting” with local law enforcement officials. Do you see who the protestors are? Click the article, man. These are old ladies and old men. These aren’t CRAZY college-based radical groups. These are ppl trying to eat and not get beaten. This could be your grandmother getting up the cojones (or cuevos, if you’re so inclined) to actually KICK a riot cop–because of the bullshit and brutality they represent.
So Eastern Europe is beaten back down into mind-numb obedience. Creativity killed. Happiness, a loanable commidity, leased by the state.
As a Hyphen American, I have to say: this is utter bullshit. Where in the fuck are the Davy Crockets and the Wild Bills? Where are the Thomas Paines and Susan B. Anthonies? Typical of so much leftist poo-pooing in the West, it is more a matter of clearing the collective conscience than actually accomplishing any of the goals of freedom.

How about a few less pissing contests as to who’s “more right”? How about some pragmatic approaches? How about actually going to Russia and getting tortured for starting a website or newsletter on the actual realities of daily living? How about actually trade sanctions on them and China for centuries of continued human rights abuses? How about your grandparents kicking the shit out of riot police for YOUR freedom? Would they? Would you?
