On HealthCare Reform and “the Socialist Question”: My nana trumps your Marx

March 10, 2009 at 10:22 am (Barrack Hussein Obama, Marx, Media Analysis, Obama, Opinion, Socialism, USSA, capitalism, politics, reverend manny) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

You can tell the Conservative Genius Patrol has been burning the midnight oil recently. The CPAC conference was a hearty multi-day belly full of laughs for instance. And as always it was keenly instructive as to what fare they will offer in the coming political season. This year, even above the rabble of the grouphate, one word echoed louder than all… Socialism. The big bad boogidy man.

Lemme share a quick something with you. I cheat a little when it comes to understanding the right. I’m totally fessing up. I get tons of webzines and newsletters and even some listservs–all with a Conservative bend. It’s very helpful in understanding the strategy behind the tactics. Oh boy… the Washington Times, the Freepers, those methed-out fools at Human Events… they have their tactic for this political season. Obama’s a socialist. He’s turning America into the USSA.

“Get it? Cuz Obama’s Socialist? It’s like a combination of the USSR and USA. DERP!! I made a funny with my thought brain!”

Long term, I’m beginning to think this strategy will ultimately backfire on them.

Short term, the goal of this strategy is to taint not only Obama , but wider Progressive Principles as Socialist. Logically, this makes little sense. What “socialism” means has become very  nebulous. Countries like Sweden, Norway, France, Spain, Germany, Ecuador and Canada all offer examples of “Socialistic” trends–but none can be called socialist. Secondly, and more clearly, Obama’s barely a Progressive, how in the hell could he be a Socialist?

But this is logic, and much like the Bolsheviks (and the Bushevicks) taught us, logic has little to do with the intended gutteral impact of retrograde propaganda. Think about it. “Abortion is MURDER!!” that one’s pretty good… three words, very bolshevik, lots of imagery, and clearly related to a legal issue that is guaranteed to get some sanctimonious suit filler elected… “Support our TROOPS!” as a response to questioning bush… that one’s really good too… it implies that if i don’t agree with you, I’d like the people defending my country to die… that’s very bolshevik…very effective…

So “USSA” and “Comrade Obama” all fit very nicely into the Conservative product line. It’s short. It’s simple. It generates powerful gutteral emotion and is a helluva election day motivator.

“You wanna live in a Gulag-state like the communists?”
“–FUCK NO… jesus christ.. “
“Then we gotta get Comrade Hussein Obamer outta office”

See the efficiency?

So the soul-less part of me understands why the Conservatives would take this approach. The facts of the issue matter little to political manipulators. They don’t want to govern well… they simply want to govern. What matters more than good ideas is how much your ideas move people so that you can attain power. Socialism… boy that’s a scary one… that’s the big bad boogey man himself

But I don’t think they know what they’re getting themselves into.

Let’s think of someone like Beulahman, someone on my blogroll who recently talked about the healthcare burden. He pays damn near 25 thousand dollars a year for health insurance. He rus his own business, generates money into the economy, thus not only generating taxes but also increasing the general pool from which taxes can be taken from. From the general tax money, folks like me, you and B’man get water pipes, electric wires, broadband expansions, satelite feeds from tv stations and cel phone service, police and fire services, safety regulations, new technologies, highways, etc… why? Because myself, B’man, you and all your friends that work… we each decided to pool together  our money for things that we clearly need.

Here’s the big fat fucking funny part. So we have this pool of OUR money, right? And we made a list of all the things we really really really need… guess what we didn’t put on that list of things we really really need? OUR HEALTH!! Ha.

Wow. Pretty silly, huh. Downright foolish, you might even say. But in response to the argument I just made, a Conservative would reply with… “you’re a socialist!”

Here’s the dangerous gambit they’re running into, though.

I’m really fucking pissed off that Buelahman has to pay 25thousand dollars a year just to make sure he has medical attention in CASE something happens. It angers the shit out of me that we can give banks trillions, but over the course of ten years, B’man will shell out a quarter mill of his hard-earned money for healthcare. I think we could do healthcare for about half our current cost (which is world average) if we centralized and organized alot of redundant departments that clutter the medical industry. I think Bman should be paying no more than say 5 thousand a year for health insurance. And if you think that makes me a socialist… idk…

Let me go a bit more personal. My nana, my grandmother, turned 81 recently. Since she was born in northern Moldova, she has survived multiple famines, the soviet invasion, the German Invasion, the Iron Guard, american carpet bombings.. all before her twenties. She then survived Nicolae Causescu and numerous other famines, purges and earthquakes. In 1989, the country overthrew Ceausescu (with aid from the West)… and she survived that revolution as well as the economic crash that ensued. Since then she has lived with my family in the States.

One could see her on purely economic terms. For twenty years she helped raise and feed four children, freeing my mother up to work (usually more than one job). With years of sacrifice, and the additional income, my family managed to buy a small house. Economically, in the scope of “the american dream”, she had a huge hand in helping my  family accomplish this small economic feat–an economic feat that generated money into the economy at an increased rate due to her presence.

But there’s more to it than that. You’re telling me that if she breaks her leg, my mom has to spend her life savings on the medical bill? Dude, medical costs are the leading cause of bankrupcy in America–not shitty mortgages.

And if I don’t want my mom to sell her house to pay a medical bill–I’m a socialist? Idk, man…

And the same goes for Progressive Ideals on corporate responsibility, environmental awareness, personal liberties and meritocracy.

The more you tell me corporate responsibility is socialist… the more you tell me civil liberties are socialist… the more likely I am to eventually believe that I am a bit more socialist than I thought.

So to my “patriotic” friends on the right… beware. This is not the 50’s. The Red Scare has worn off much of its luster, as have your worn out trickle-down theories. The more you tell peopl basic human rights and human decency is socialist… the less evil and vile the word sounds. They hope to scare people away from the left, but in the long run I think they may just be creating a deeper pool of leftist strength.

Oh Conservatives. You dumb bastards. People have real problems right now–and you offer rhetoric? How shallow, how callous, how utterly inhumane.

Conservatism is an ideology. My grandmother is a human being. Your ideology will not pay her medical bills. Perhaps mine will.

If Lady Justice eats swine, let’s feed her some Bush-flavored sausage

March 5, 2009 at 8:58 am (Alberto Gonzales, Attorney General, Harriet Miers, Karl Rove, Media Analysis, News, media, politics, reverend manny) (, , , , , , , , )

Here’s the lede from the Times article

WASHINGTON — Karl Rove and Harriet E. Miers, top former aides to President George W. Bush, will testify under oath to a House committee investigating the firings of nine United States attorneys in 2007, under an agreement announced Wednesday by the panel.

and further down

Under the agreement, Mr. Rove and Ms. Miers will provide depositions and sworn public testimony about the firings, but the scope of their testimony will be limited to the dismissals and closely related issues.

Moreover, the two former Bush officials will not be asked about their conversations with Mr. Bush on the subject or their discussions with other members of the White House counsel’s office.

The committee will also be able to ask questions about the case of former Gov. Don Siegelman of Alabama, a Democrat who has said he was victim of a politically motivated prosecution, possibly involving administration officials.

Now, in case you’re a little out of the loop, here’s the short and sweet. 9 federal level US Attorneys were fired or replaced by the Bush Administration for political reasons. The Bush Administration used these offices to a)reward “loyal bushies” (a direct quote from an email) and b)then use these “loyal bushies” to prosecute democrats on a variety of grounds.  Most famous might be the sham trial of Governor Siegelman.

There’s oodles of good stuff online about this. For example, here’s the transcript of former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales lying to being interviewed by CNN’s Campell Brown.

It’s truly fascinating. For one, Gonzales talks about what a splendid job he did. WTF? For another, about three questions down, Brown finally asks Gonzales about the USAttorney Firings. He says he had nothing to do with it. Brown then pulls out a report that puts a ton of fault on him for “abdicating his responsibility to safeguard the integrity and independence of the Justice Department.”

Gonzales, confronted by facts, did what most Bushies do. They pretend the facts are entirely partisan (even though the report was put together by an inspector general).

For example, let’s just consider the following possibility. What if Harriet Miers, a top Bush aide and operative, sent some sort of email to some top DoJustice operative confirming this fucked up little scheme of theirs to eliminate their political enemies? Let’s say we had that email? Would that be the “smoking gun” that would allow us to take the whole shit-litter down? Cuz, here it is! In 2007!!

Either way… I think it’s a prime responsibility of our generation to make sure the Bush Administration’s war crimes are punished. It is our responsibility to the world community and it is our duty to future americans.

So one more time til the fucker’s in jail… FUCK BUSH!

..and no, I’m not sorry Rush.

Btw, if you’d like to thank, Representative John Conyers Jr., a Michigan Democrat and chairman of the judiciary panel, you can send him a quick email to john.conyers@mail.house.gov . You can also call up one of his offices at

  • Washington Office: 202-225-5126
  • Detroit Office: 313-961-5670
  • Trenton / Downriver Office: 734-675-4084

Let’s get started on this American Nuremberg as soon as possible, before the criminals and evidence can escape our grasp. This has nothing to do with retalliation. This has everything to do with restitution.

Linkarrhea: Reverend Manny’s Sunday Shoutouts

March 1, 2009 at 9:01 pm (progressive culture, reverend manny) (, , , , , , , , , )

… and a happy S’Tona Shabbaz to all of you…

let’s keep strengthening our cultural bonds, shall we? I’ve been meaning to shout out the people below for a while now… so today it’s just a short list… 4 people… 1 blogger… 2 rappers…. 1 author

1) Buelahman’s Red State Revolt (Buelahman = redneck luminary) has become a steady blogread for me. Here’s one of my favorite of his recent blogs. Also, check out his freaky sex fridays.  Idk where you find these, B’man, but thanks… you always find some crazy story. Thanks for being a culture warrior for us right on the front lines… redneck country…

2) Recently, I’ve been listening to alot of the new “Holla Burton” album from Silent Knight, a good friend a great hip hop artist. Check out his music myspace page here (my personal jam is “regular guy”). The Holla Burton album, which I’ve been abusing in my iTunes, is available for free online (my favorite price for good music). Here’s one of the places you can download it. In terms of high-level lyricism, Silent Knight might be the measuring stick for underground hip hop. He’s performed with Kweli, Immortal Technique, etc… trust me the kid is ill aka supertalented aka absolutely the hip-hop grits. Give him a listen…

3) Since I love me some smart-mouthed hip hop… no mention of super-lyricists of the underground is complete (for me)… without production guru and wordsmith extraordinaire Iamisee… I had a few opportunities as a journalist to speak with this man… I consider myself pretty lucky for those occasions… . if you’re in one of the few zipcodes where burning something musky is legal or decriminalized–burn one and bump an iamisee album… check out his myspace page here…  My favorite song on there is Danger Stranger… and his video for golden sky is below at the end of the post. I believe he has at least one album you can buy on iTunes…

4) Finally, last nite I was lucky enough to attend the book release party for “Listen… Vol 1: Death”.  S.i.r. Pierre, the author of this first installment, has penned up an uncomfortably realistic novel focusing on the lives of a few new york city denizens. It’s a pretty engrossing read and there’s supposed to be a few more Volumes on the way. You can find it online for FREE (my second favorite four letter word) in installments at S.I.R. Pierre’s blog. I believe the intro and chapter 1 are up. From what the author told me, he’ll be uploading a chapter every week or two. You can also buy the book for 30 bucks at amazon. It’s a bit steep but it comes with a whole bunch of artwork in it, etc… think there’s like a dozen drawings/portraits in the actual book. Check out the blog at least, though… he’s a sharp young urban writer… too rare for our generation….

So stay sharp, keep reading, and practice as much extrovert humility as possible, my ppl… until that Golden Sky
